  2. Country: England
  3. Location: County Durham
Project Status:
  1. Planned
  2. Consented
  3. In Construction
  4. Operational

Overview

We are preparing to submit plans to Durham County Council for a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 57MW, to be located east of Spennymoor. If approved, the battery would store enough electricity to meet the average annual needs of around 20,000 homes and prevent approximately 45,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The proposed development site measures approximately 1.2 hectares and lies on a former mine. The land is mostly flat and benefits from some natural screening.

The facility will comprise approximately 28 battery modules housed in containers, along with associated equipment including transformers, a control room and a switch room.

The battery will connect to the Spennymoor National Grid substation, located south of Thinford Lane, via underground cabling, using a preferred route primarily through the public highway verge.

Access to the site will be from the A688 and via an existing access point on Hett Mill Lane.

A 57MW battery facility would store enough electricity to meet the average annual needs of around 20,000 homes and prevent approximately 45,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Why do we need battery storage?

Battery storage is a critical part of the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure, helping to:

  • Balance electricity supply and demand in real-time
  • Enhance the flexibility and resilience of the power grid
  • Support the expansion of renewables

The project therefore supports the UK Government’s legally binding target to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, and its ambition to reach 95% low-carbon power by 2030. The Clean Power 2030 Action Plan envisages up to 27GW of battery capacity across the UK.
