The role of the Dorenell Ranger Service

The Dorenell ranger service are part of the Dorenell Wind Farm Community Fund set up in 2019 by EDF Power Solutions.  We are responsible for carrying out works required by the habitat management plan and access management strategy for the wind farm, along with delivering events and environmental education across Dufftown, Auchindoun, Glenrinnes, Glenlivet, Inveravon and the Cabrach.

As part of the habitat management plan we carry out seasonal raptor, mammal and vegetation surveys, as well as monthly monitoring the area of restored blanket bog on the wind farm footprint. We will be carrying out trial reseeding this year to regenerate degraded peatland on the windfarm as well as Sitka spruce removal and protecting native saplings from overgrazing.  We are also responsible for biannual trail audits and work closely with partners in delivering our golden eagle satellite tagging  project.

The community fund is administered by Foundation Scotland. We do not have access to the fund so if you would like to get in touch regarding community funding applications please follow the link below.

Our role also includes delivering the access management strategy. As part of the plan, we deliver a wide range of events, seasonal guided hikes, weekly health walks, monthly ranger rambles, and guided bike rides, as well as promoting responsible access to our waymarked trails and outdoor learning. Our educational programme sees us visiting local schools as well as bringing schools to the windfarm and visitor centre. We work with several local organisations, and we are active participants in the junior ranger programme.
